Today marks the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War I. The war showed the consequences of what happens when petty grudges, racial fear, greed and the inertia of national war machines come together. Millions were killed, whole regions were laid waste. The end result didn’t warrant the expedeture of lives. War rarely does. We need to remember this.

If you don’t know much about the war, go find the Hardcore History podcast discussing it. It is very well done.

unfortunately it was far from over.  I tend to agree with the notion that WWI and WWII were not actually separate wars, just one long conflict with a festering ~20 year cease-fire in the middle.

My great grandfather worked in the boiler room of a destroyer in WWI. Here he is in France. Not sure how they had access to a camera or why him and that other guy switched uniforms. He’s in the far right of the last photo with his guns out. He ran away from home in Calabria and came to America. He didn’t get his citizenship or learn English until after the war.

So little is taught about World War 1 in American schools. The only things most people know about it are trench warfare and unimaginable suffering.

The Great War channel on YouTube traced the entire war, week by week , in a “this happened this week 100 years ago” format. They also have special episodes about specific topics, episodes where they answer viewers’ questions, and a lot more. It really opened my eyes to the scope of the war and how it was so, so much more than I thought.

Episode 1 is here, with the first year’s playlist:

One of the things that’s interesting to me is how often tensions over the middle east are glossed over or completely ignored in simpler histories of WWI. But realizing the British, Russians, Germans, and French all wanted a slice of the dying Ottoman Empire makes the war seem a little more relatable as well a little less insane than just Austria and Serbia were fighting, and suddenly the whole world joined in for no reason.

The war did not officially end in Turkey until 1923.

That Hardcore history pod cast got me reading more WW1 history. Excellent stuff. That era shaped the world we live in more than my inadequate public education had led me to believe.

Well I hate to be the one to spoil it for you, but they did a sequel, too. It was even crazier than the first one.

the scale is truely insane to comprehend. By the end of the war the allies were firing 12,000 tons of artillery shells a day!

Every world leader should be forced to read The Guns of August to see how quickly the best laid out plans can go to shit.

Such a pointless war. It gets all the more frustrating when you realize that most of the heads of state in Europe didn’t even really want to fight it, they just kind of reluctantly lurched into it after various diplomatic efforts failed during the summer.

Then, later on, Emperor Karl got blackmailed into keeping Austria-Hungary in  the fight when he was caught trying to negotiate a truce behind Germany’s back.
